• Highlights • An experimentally induced state of uncertainty led to increases in anxiety in study participants. • When the state of uncertainty was perceived as avoidable , participants reported increases in anger. • When the state of uncertainty was perceived as unavoidable , participants reported decreases in anger. • The findings suggest that when one’s state of uncertainty is avoidable, anger is experienced alongside anxiety.
