  • The effect of environmental factors known to induce bolting and flowering, on the onset of tipburn in Chinese cabbage plants was studied. Vernalization induced or markedly increased the disorder. Long days (LD) or foliar applications of GA3 following vernalization accentuated the effect of the cold treatment. LD obtained by Gro-Iux fluorescent lamps (LDR) caused more tipburn than that obtained by cool white fluorescent lamps (LDW). Spraying Ca 2+ salts directly on the young leaves, but without application to the soil, markedly reduced the damage. Treating the plants with the anti-GA chemicals, paclobutrazol or daminozide, before vernalization or with paclobutrazol following vernalization markedly increased the disorder. Only daminozide applied after vernalization attenuated the severity of tipburn. Atomic absorption spectrophotometer analysis showed a decrease in the total and dissolved Ca 2+ at the distal half of young vernalized leaves. EOS analysis, which indicates qualitative differences, revealed a relatively marked decrease in Ca 2+ at the margins of the vernalized leaves. Since all the factors except Ca 2+, examined in the present work induce flower formation in Chinese cabbage, the possibility that the differentiating inflorescence following vernalization competes with the young leaves for the Ca 2+, which leads to Ca 2+ deficiency in the leaves, is discussed.
