  • 01 02 Holocaust Impiety in Literature, Popular Music and Film is an account of provocative and controversial representations of the Holocaust. Many well-known artists have attracted criticism for approaching the Nazi genocide in ways that have been deemed ill-conceived or offensive. Examples include Sylvia Plath's notorious claim that 'Every woman adores a Fascist' in her poem 'Daddy' and songs such as 'Belsen Was a Gas' by the Sex Pistols. The Holocaust has even provided material for stand-up comedy and gory Hollywood blockbusters such as Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds . In this book, MatthewBoswell argues that while such works are often shocking, the value of shock should not be lightly dismissed in the context of the Holocaust. Drawing on the philosopher Gillian Rose's criticisms of what she termed 'Holocaust piety' and its claim that the only possible response to the Holocaust is a respectful silence, this book considers how irreverent works of fiction play an important role in shaping our contemporary understanding of the Nazi genocide and also of ourselves, prompting us to reflect on what it means to be human in light of the tragic events that they reference. 31 02 Matthew Boswell examines a range of controversial cultural representations of the Holocaust and Nazism, from Sylvia Plath and the Sex Pistols through to Quentin Tarantino and Holocaust comedy 13 02 MATTHEW BOSWELL Research Fellow in Memory Studies within the Department of English at the University of Salford, UK, and has previously published essays on the Holocaust poetry of Sylvia Plath, John Berryman and Geoffrey Hill. 02 02 Surveying irreverent and controversial representations of the Holocaust - from Sylvia Plath and the Sex Pistols to Quentin Tarantino and Holocaust comedy - Matthew Boswell considers how they might play an important role in shaping our understanding of the Nazi genocide and what it means to be human. 16 02 The following two titles are the closest competitors in that they present multidisciplinary approaches to Holocaust representation across a range of media, but our book draws on different primary texts (e.g. by looking at popular music) and is differentiated by its focus on Holocaust representations by non-victims:   Young: WRITING AND REWRITING THE HOLOCAUST: NARRATIVE AND THE CONSEQUENCES OF INTERPRETATION; Indiana University Press, 1990 Rothberg: TRAUMATIC REALISM: THE DEMANDS OF HOLOCAUST REPRESENTATION; University of Minnesota Press, 2000 Other related titles:   Sicher: THE HOLOCAUST NOVEL; Routledge, 2007 Rowland: HOLOCAUST POETRY; Edinburgh University Press, 2005 Eaglestone: THE HOLOCAUST AND THE POSTMODERN; Oxford University Press, 2004  Whitehead: TRAUMA FICTION; Edinburgh University Press, 2004 Gubar: POETRY AFTER AUSCHWITZ; Indiana University Press, 2003 Vice: HOLOCAUST FICTION; Routledge, 2000 Horowitz: VOICING THE VOID: MUTENESS AND MEMORY IN HOLOCAUST FICTION; State University of New York Press, 1997 Caruth: UNCLAIMED EXPERIENCE: TRAUMA, NARRATIVE AND HISTORY; Johns Hopkins University Press, 1996 Felman and Laub: TESTIMONY: CRISES OF WITNESSING IN LITERATURE, PSYCHOANALYSIS AND HISTORY; Routledge, 1992 Friedlander: PROBING THE LIMITS OF REPRESENTATION: NAZISM AND THE FINAL SOLUTION; Harvard University Press, 1992 Langer: HOLOCAUST TESTIMONIES: THE RUINS OF MEMORY; Yale University Press, 1991 19 02 Examines the 'second generation' of Holocaust-related art, touching on very current debates about the links between testimony and fiction, and about the role and value of Holocaust representations by non-victims Genuinely interdisciplinary - draws on a wide range of literary, visual and musical media Fits in with current interest in issues of memory (and especially the ethics of memory) across the humanities The Holocaust is widely taught across a variety of different subject areas 04 02 Introduction PART I: POETRY Sylvia Plath, Ariel (1965) and Other Poems W.
