Beschreibungen/Notizen
An exploration of identity construction by the black middle-class in suburban Washington D.C. In depth interviews were conducted with thirty couples in three communities: a majority white, middle class suburb; a majority black, middle class suburb; & a majority black, upper middle class suburb. By selecting suburbs with different racial & socioeconomic compositions, the author was able to identify divisions within the black middle class. The author finds that members of the black middle class have a "tool kit" of five distinct social identities that can be adopted depending on circumstances, & that residents of the three suburbs make different decisions regarding which of the five to display.
