  • In this article, we will argue that previous conceptualizations fail to spot one significant type of scandal in media society, which we prefer to call the talk scandal. Talk scandals, not analyzed or noted in the literature, are quite frequent. However, most importantly they represent a new step in the mediatization of scandals because they are not only communicated and dramatized in the media, but also in most cases originate in the media. There are not necessarily original actions outside the media; the disclosure of back-stage actions outside the media is no longer a general characteristic of political scandals. The overall aim of this article is to develop the concept of the talk scandal, and in so doing to also provide a contribution to the theory on mediated scandal, first and foremost developed by Thompson (2000).
