• Digital art history as a method using the computer as a research tool has followed the development of Digital Humanities with some delay – a delay which is mainly due to technical developments. Digital image recognition became possible only several decades after digital text recognition. What is now considered as Digital Art History, is limited due to the use of applications which do not address specific questions of art history. Moreover, the use of data pertaining to art objects does not exceed that of the common use of digitalization. An analysis tool specifically for works of art beyond material analysis has not yet been developed. Although artificial intelligence (AI) offers the possibility of image recognition, the analysis is limited to coarse data such as shapes and structural density, or quantities of colour and tonal value. However, more precise methods of image recognition which allow the analysis of details within a drawing, will probably be soon available. The article tries to summarize the current application of digital data to art history research.
