  • So far, it has not fully been researched what exactly the radio had to offer for children and adolescents in the time of its emergence as a medium. Relevant studies on the radio of the Weimar Republic explicitly exclude broadcasts aimed at children and adolescents or they merely focus on specific broadcasting stations or authors, respectively. Therefore, the present contribution addresses a key desideratum and, with its digital database, attempts to provide the first fully fledged collection of children’s and adolescents’ radio broadcasts from 1924 to 1944. This overview article outlines institutional and technical developments of the new medium and additionally briefly addresses the relevant programmes of the individual broadcasters. In the beginning, the focus lay on reading aloud fairy tales. However, the broadcasters soon differentiated their programmes according to age groups (children vs. adolescents) and genres (fairy tales, rhyming stories, adventure narratives etc.). Additionally, they developed different forms such as the audio play, the improvisation and the adaptation of classic plays or more extensive narratives adjusted to the specific target group. Some innovative personalities of the early radio established new media-specific formats which gained popularity beyond the respective broadcast area. With the national socialist party seizing power in 1933, the innovative development of the radio in general and, consequently, also of childrens’ and adolsecents’ radio came to a halt. One the one hand, this was due to the fact that almost all intendants as well as many experienced authors and studio employees were dismissed. On the other hand, the broadcasters were put under state control and their programmes were forced in line with the new political doctrine. All in all, under national-socialist rule, the adolescents’ broadcasts were revalued and politicised, the production of fairy tale readings and plays aimed at entertainment continued.
