  • A series of germanates, [Ni(DETA) 2 ] 2 ·Cl·[Ge 7 O 13 (OH) 2 F 3 ] (DETA = diethylenetriamine, JLG-3 ), [Ni(1,2-PDA) 3 ]·[Ge 7 O 14 F 2 (OC 2 NH 7 )]·0.5H 2 O (1,2-PDA = 1,2-propanediamine, JLG-6 ), [Ni 2 (TETA) 3 ] 0.5 ·[Ge 7 O 14 F 2 (OC 2 NH 7 )]·H 2 O (TETA = triethylenetetramine, JLG-7 ), and |(NH 3 CH 2 CH 2 OH) 2 |[Ni 2 (TEPA) 2 (en)][Ge 7 O 14 F 3 ] 2 ·H 2 O (en = ethylenediamine, TEPA = tetraethylenepentamine, JLG-8 ), have been synthesized. All these compounds are co-templated by metal complexes and organic/inorganic species in a solvothermal system. Their structures are built up from Ge 7 X 19 (Ge 7 , X = -O, -OH, -F or -OC 2 NH 7 ) clusters connected in two different modes: T 2 linkage mode to form the 1-D chain-like structure JLG-3 and T 4 linkage mode to form 2-D layered structures JLG- n ( n = 6, 7, 8). It is interesting to note that all of the layers of JLG- n ( n = 6, 7, 8) are composed of a pair of chains, which can be found separately in the structure of JLG-3 . Considering such chains or layers as SBUs, we can design numerous hypothetical 2-D layered and 3-D open-framework germanates based on the concept of "Scale Chemistry". By using metal complexes and organic amine cations/inorganic anions as co-templates, four novel germanates JLG- n ( n = 3, 6, 7, 8) have been prepared under solvothermal conditions. These compounds are all built up from Ge 7 clusters and classified into two structural types: according to T 2 connection mode of the Ge 7 cluster for JLG-3 with a chain-like structure and to T 4 connection mode for JLG- n ( n = 6, 7, 8) with 2-D layered structures. Then numerous 2-D layered structures were designed by different arrangements of the R- and L-chains of JLG-3 . In addition, two 3-D frameworks, H-F1 (16-rings) and H-F2 (24-rings), were designed on the basis of the sheets of JLG-6 and JLG-8 , respectively, with the connection of the Ge 7 clusters in T 4 P mode. Since Ge 7 clusters display various connection modes, they are found to be effective for construction of novel open-framework germanates. A series of 2-D and even 3-D structures of germanates can be designed using Ge 7 clusters as SBUs based on the concept of "Scale Chemistry".
