Peter Heintel and Larissa Krainer propose to free the term sustainability of its moral meaning (content, implications) and to analyze it as a cultural concept. To do so, culture should not be seen as an extension of the classic 3-pillar mode of sustainability, but as a movement in which new meaning is created. In a 2nd step, culture is shown to be a dialectical phenomenon and a term of process. If sustainability is to have an effect, it is necessary to design, define and collectively agree on a new aim for history, the authors Peter Heintel and Larissa Krainer argue. After a detailed criticism of the "Modell Neuzeit" - which they demonstrate is one-sided (and unbalanced) - Heintel and Krainer propose to design cultural sustainability as a culture of self-reflection.
