Walsh offers his response to Ralph Hancock's analysis of his work. At that first level of concerns that animate Hancock's reflections are those that center on the poor political judgments of many of the great philosophical figures of the past century. Nowhere are these political prejudices subjected to the kind of scrutiny that these thinkers have displayed within their philosophical works. Great thinkers have proved to be terrible judges of politics. Walsh stresses that it is possible to conclude that their political obtuseness reflects badly on the penetration of their philosophical insights, that their compromises with mendacity ultimately compromise their intellectual stature.
