  • 2 groups of 30 children ranging in age from 3 to 10 years were studied; the 1st group was normal & the 2nd consisted of speech & language handicapped children. Comparisons were made on input functions, general behavior, elaborative performance, & speech sound production to determine if the groups could be differentiated on any basis other than language performance. A 2nd comparison--to determine whether the clinical group represented a homogeneous population or 2 subgroups (in terms of symbolic function)--was made. The results show that normal & clinical groups cannot be differentiated on the basis of input functions--e.g., auditory & visual thresholds, & auditory & visual analyses of dimensions & sequences. Good & bad responses were obtained from both groups. However, more children in the clinical group were (1) deficient in input functions, & (2) could not even be tested on some input tasks. The differentiating aspects of general behavior were that the clinical group showed greater fluctuation in attention span & poorer hand-eye coordination on the more complex tasks. These children also had greater difficulty in anticipating & shifting behavior & were inferior in elaborative functions & imitation. S. Karganovic
