Education in our society could be viewed as a form of involuntary servitude. Students accept a marked decline in standard of living and forego earnings of some $1,000 to $4,500 a year. Their future gains, however, seem more clearly attributable to the credential they gain by acceptance of the student status than to demonstrable consequences of their educational experience.
