This article discusses the contribution made by Orville G. Brim, Jr. President of the American Orthopsychiatric Association. For "Bert," as he is known to hundreds of friends and colleagues, is at once a research sociologist, a statesman, and, above all, a creative architect of social science and social policy. While his achievements in all three roles have been substantial, it is in this last sphere that his contribution has had, and will continue to have, the greatest impact on American social science and social institutions. Brim's creativity is reflected not only in the conception and shared execution of specific studies and programs, but more importantly, in the discovery and mapping of whole sub-continents which invite, and, in Brim's terms, demand scientific exploration. Such exploration becomes important not only for its theoretical significance but also, and this is the hallmark of Brim's every concern, for its consequence to the everyday lives of the inhabitants in the territorities being explored. The fact that many of the publications stemming from Brim's project on the social effects of testing list him only as a joint author, or not at all, is a reflection of his remarkable capacity to engender the spark of creativity in others, and then to nourish not so much his own ideas as theirs.
