  • Although different demographic groups of children often obtain unequal mean scores on IQ tests, test bias is only present when external criteria are differentially predicted across these groups. Concern about possible racial bias is relevant for several recently developed parent- or teacher-informant behavior rating inventories that incorporate scales designed to predict the cognitive status of children. Using a multiple regression procedure, the scales of the Personality Inventory for Children (PIC) were evaluated to determine whether they were biased according to race, sex, or age in their relationship to several cognitive and academic tests. The three PIC profile scales which measure child cognitive status (cognitive triad) obtained substantial correlations with these tests which were free of these bias effects within a sample of 329 children and adolescents evaluated by a child guidance facility. As expected, PIC scales reflecting child affect or behavior did not generally correlate significantly with these cognitive measures.
