• The German Embryo Protection Act prohibits any kind of intervention in a human embryo that is not conducive to the embryo's own survival. However, recent advances in human embryonic stem (ES)-cell research have stoked a debate about whether research that uses human ES cells can be justified in Germany. Because the derivation of ES cells requires the destruction of the embryo, it is prohibited in Germany.
