  • The list that follows is divided into four broad categories: picture and coloring books for preschoolers and beginners, storybooks and other texts for primary school readers, literature for middle school children, and literature for high school readers. A boy and his younger sister, with happy memories of their grandmother, are allowed to participate in her funeral and burial, and the division of her property among family members so that each receives some memento of her life. An activity book format allows children to draw pictures, color images, or insert thoughts on its pages. The stories are narrated by two dogs, Barklay and Eve, who learn that loss and sadness do happen, that the events that give rise to such feelings are not their fault, that strong feelings are okay if expressed in constructive ways, and similar lessons. First published in 1886, this classic literary work is a masterful portrait of the experience of dying.
