  • It is noted that most Japanese novelists have rebelled against their native tradition; Japanese writers & public alike are familiar with a vast range of Western thought & literature, extending from Greek mythology to Amer Zen. Yet the comparatively few novels that have been translated from the Japanese retain a special flavor, a lingering, pervasive influence of the traditional culture. The works of Mishima Yukio, Natsume Soseki, Tanizaki Junichiro, & Kawabata Yasunari are examined & evaluated, esp as to their psychol'al insight & portrayal of HR, which are viewed as peculiarly Japanese, although they are often criticized by purist critics as reflecting Western influences. It is asserted that ever since the Meiji Restoration of 1868 there has always been a more or less traumatic process of change in Japanese fiction, as intellectuals discovered & defined their Angst, as writers adopted alien conventions of fiction, & as a newly revitalized literature began to influence as well as to reflect one of the most rapidly developing societies of modern times. As a result, many Japanese novelists have suffered from a compulsion to confess, if not to sin for the sake of confessing. Among their standard themes is the vacillation or anguished choice between fam duty & personal freedom. It is stated that the sensibility of modern Japanese fiction is of a kind that has been cultivated in Japanese literature in every age. Typical characteristics of the modern literature are: depicting conflict between good & bad, often sexualized; & portraying the drastic change brought about in Japan by Western influence as alluring & fascinating though corrupting. Japanese, works explore human sensibility often to its very limits. Most serious novelists since Meiji have followed any path, old or new, to explore the inner world.
