  • Presented in III PARTS containing 14 Chpts, with a Preface, this vol addresses questions commonly arising in the grounded theory approach to qualitative research regarding interpretation, theory construction, researcher bias, & analysis. PART I - BASIC CONSIDERATIONS - provides an overview of the operational logic behind the use of grounded theory in (1) Introduction -- employs a question & answer format to explain differences between grounded theory research & modes of analysis from other types of qualitative research; (2) Getting Started -- provides a set of procedures & guidelines for beginning a grounded theory study, presents suggestions on how to identify sources of researchable problems, & offers guidelines for framing research questions; (3) Theoretical Sensitivity -- explains what is meant by the idea that researchers need to keep a balance between being creative, which is a necessary component of theory development, & following the scientific method of investigation; & (4) The Uses of Literature -- discusses the uses of literature in grounded theory studies & dispels some myths that have developed about it. PART II - CODING PROCEDURES - discusses the details of the procedures of data organization & analysis in (5) Open Coding -- describes the step-by-step process that begins with concept labeling & proceeds to group concepts to form categories, concluding with how to develop categories in terms of their properties & the dimensional ranges over which properties might vary; (6) Techniques for Enhancing Theoretical Sensitivity -- offers techniques that allow researchers to break through biases & standard ways of thinking about data, thus enabling them to think about data in new ways while still grounding their findings in context; (7) Axial Coding -- describes how categories are related to their subcategories by means of a model or paradigm, & discusses uses of both inductive & deductive thinking to derive & test hypotheses regarding possible relationships between a category & its subcategories; (8) Selective Coding -- explains how major categories are integrated & how variation is achieved in the theory by grouping categories according to their specific dimensional locations; (9) Process -- shows how change & movement can be brought into the theory; (10) The Conditional Matrix -- presents a framework for integrating conditions & consequences into the theory by linking them to a phenomenon through action/interaction, & discusses differences between formal & substantive theory; & (11) Theoretical Sampling -- explains the sampling methods & procedures in grounded theory & clarifies how sampling differs according to the type of coding that the researcher uses. PART III - ADJUNCTIVE PROCEDURES - concludes with (12) Memos and Diagrams -- explains how memos & diagrams are used to organize & follow the analysis of data, & to facilitate growth in depth & degree of abstractness through the coding process; (13) Writing Theses and Monographs, and Giving Talks about Your Research -- discusses the process of preparing & presenting research results for publication in books, journals, & dissertations; & (14) Criteria for Judging a Grounded Theory Study -- presents criteria for evaluating the efficacy & reliability of qualitative research results. 7 Figures, 66 References.
