  • This book examines postmodern politics via readings of the philosophy of Jean-Francois Lyotard, Richard Rorty, & Michel Foucault. Specifically, the analysis attempts to formulate an oppositional politics -- a politics of difference -- in which politics is conceived broadly enough to include what bourgeois liberalism has either relegated to the sphere of the private or suppressed altogether. This project is supported via the use of certain insights from postmodernism & poststructuralism to provide oppositional struggles with a framework for the formation of a viable political model, arguing that because poststructuralists like Foucault & Rorty universalize difference, their work cannot provide a useful political theory. The book makes a solid case for an emancipatory politics that stresses difference & radical pluralism, & advances a bold reconstructed version of postmodern politics based on the theory of the "subject-in-community" to arrive at a true politics of difference. The 4 Chpts follow an Introduction. (1) Lyotard. (2) Rorty. (3) Foucault. (4) Evaluating "Post Philosophies" for Oppositional Politics; Selves, Community, and the Politics of Difference. W. Howard
