• A reprint of a selection from Kelley's (1914) Modern Industry: In Relation to the Family, Health, Education, Morality (pp. 53-69), this article deplores the working conditions (then) of most American wage workers. A number of case studies illustrate the workers' plight but also show that neither the weak, unenforceable federal policy nor union-organized strikes for higher wages & better conditions were able to ameliorate the situation.
