• Besides being known as the father of floodplain management, the national flood insurance program in the United States, and the founder of an interdisciplinary science of natural hazards, Gilbert White made major contributions to the study of water systems in developing countries, the management and preservation of arid lands, environmental change (including global warming and the threat of "nuclear" war), and international cooperation regarding water resources of the Lower Mekong, Nile, and Jordan Rivers, and the Aral Sea.
