SignStream, a multimedia database system for sign language research currently in development at Dartmouth College, is described as a unified computer environment for the manipulation & transcription of videotaped utterances, designed for American Sign Language (ASL) but applicable to any sign language & the gestural accompaniment of spoken language. The database contains utterances each associating a detailed transcription of a digitized video segment with a QuickTime movie file containg the segment; transcription & video are displayed in linked windows, & the transcription comprises editable data fields that are aligned on the screen. A variety of video object manipulation tools is provided; data encoded using SignStream can be shared & distributed via an Internet data repository. 4 References. J. Hitchcock
