• The first coins bearing the initials of a pope belong to the time of Sergius I (687-701) and are part of a complex series of silver fractions issued at Rome between the late seventh and mid-eighth centuries, some in the name of East Roman (Byzantine) emperors or with the name of the city itself. At some point after 776, during the pontificate of Hadrian I (772-795), the long tradition of recognizing the emperor of Constantinople on the coinage of Rome came to an end; instead, the pope was named on an altogether new type of broad silver coin, modelled in its general format and, later, weight on Frankish denarii. This turn to the north instead of the east mirrored the general realignment of papal political interests in the mid- and late-eighth century. [Publication Abstract]
