This essay explores the history of the preservation of sections of the 19th century Hull House Settlement; the construction and opening of the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum on the University of Illinois campus in Chicago in 1967; the things that reconstruction concealed about the history of the institution and the physical spaces it once inhabited, as well as the ways in which the reconstruction restored and recovered material artefacts and social history about the Hull House settlement that had been long-lost to history. The essay explores the impact of the Hull House settlement upon Chicago's social history, and the ongoing value of the settlement house movement in the United States. OA
