This issue of "African Arts" considers the DuBoisian "double consciousness" embedded in performance traditions in New Orleans and how they are enacted on the body, at festivals, and in the city at large, illustrating how racial politics influenced the city's changing relationship with the African diaspora. The essays critically analyze how African heritage has been linked to issues of authenticity, cultural revival, and tourism in both pre- and post-Katrina New Orleans.
