• The winners of Financial Planning's 2013 Influencer Awards are profiled. Taking bold steps is one of the reasons why Ron Carson, CEO of Carson Wealth Management, is Financial Planning's Industry Leadership Influencer Award winner this year. The No. 1 issue is that the industry is not prepared for succession. Preparing for a new generation of clients also needs to be an industry priority, Carson insists. If a business is to thrive, it must be at the top of its game in operations, marketing, recruiting and risk management. Joni Youngwirth, managing principal of practice management at Commonwealth Financial Network and the winner of this year's Practice Management Influencer Award, wants to help. Sheryl Rowling is the winner of this year's Tech Innovator Influencer Award. Rowling's Total Rebalance Expert software, commonly known as TRX, is now used by more than 300 RIAs with assets under management ranging between $20 million and $1 billion. Rob Arnott, winner of this year's Portfolio Innovator Influencer Award, founded Research Affiliates in 2002 to create a set of index methodologies that are licensed to indexing giants like FTSE and Russell. Richard Brown, CEO of JNBA Financial Advisors, and the winner of this year's New Generation Influencer Award, set out to create qualified young planners to hire. Lew & Karen Altfest of Altfest Personal Wealth Management are winners of the Lifetime Achievement award.
