Beschreibungen/Notizen
Discusses the legacy of the art educator Viktor Lowenfeld and presents the results of a survey aimed at assessing his theories. The author describes Lowenfeld's early life, his family's departure from Vienna in 1939, and his work in the U.S.A., and highlights his book Creative and Mental Growth (New York: Macmillan). She notes influences on his theories of children's artistic development and highlights criticisms of his views. She describes the survey undertaken in five European countries and the children involved, assesses their drawings in the light of Lowenfeld's theories, and outlines the limitations of the study. She assesses the value of a comparative study of European and American schoolchildren, argues that Lowenfeld's methodology applies across European cultures, and identifies issues in need of further research.
