A hundred years after the first appearance of Shakespearean Tragedy (1904), A.C. Bradley is no longer a threat, but he is still a real presence for readers who are not professional scholars and critics, and some who are, not least because he expresses complex ideas with exemplary lucidity and humility. Bradley is the easiest of critics to misrepresent by selective quotation, but there is what might be called a triumphalist strain of thought or voice in his writing that is hard for a modern reader to swallow.
