The spiritual play owes its origin in the 10th/11th Century and its, especially towards the late Middle Ages, development that exploded beyond measure to meet the increasing need of believers to experience the events of salvation history subjectively and emotionally, to experience them in a physical presence congregation the joy of the three Marys at the empty tomb or the joy at the defeat of the devil;2 the passion play, the most widely developed type of play in the late Middle Ages, leaves the passion before the eyes of the citizens, with constant appeals, to the sufferings of Christ and his mother participate affectively, take place in their marketplace. This feeling of sympathy for Christ and Mary is not regarded as a purely aesthetic-theatrical affect, but is instead attributed a salvific effect.3 This shows both the ritual, worship-like character of the spiritual play and the great importance and religious function of the theatrically evoked affects.
