The present topical issue on ‘‘multi-digit number processing’’ has been compiled with a threefold aim in mind. First, for researchers who are not yet familiar with the topic, it provides a good opportunity for an introduction to this particular field. To assist with this, the topical issue contains a review article providing an overview of the field followed by empirical papers on current research and opinion pieces that discuss issues currently hotly debated in the field. Second, a topical issue does, of course, provide the opportunity to focus on and to integrate research on a particular topic, in this case multi-digit number processing.
