Œuvres complètes V, Euvres en rime, Troisième parti: “Les Jeux,” volume 3; “Le Brave, comédie”; “L'Eunuque, comédie”; “Devis des dieux.” Jean-Antoine de Baïf. Ed. Jean Vignes, Malcolm Quainton, and Elizabeth Vinestock. Textes littéraires de la Renaissance 22. Paris: Honoré Champion, 2016. 596 pp. €95
According to the original edition, that comedy was commissioned by Charles IX and his mother Catherine de’ Medici, and performed at the Hôtel de Guise in Paris on 28 January 1567. The classical comedies chosen by Baïf put on stage several of the stock characters who will have a long life in European theater: the miles gloriosus of course (Le Brave is named Taillebras, while L'Eunuque features Trason); the flattering parasite (respectively, Gallepain and Naton); the resourceful servant (Finet and Parmenon); and a familiar crowd of courtesans and young lovers. Besides an introduction and copious notes to each of the three texts, this volume concludes with a glossary, a bibliography, and an index nominum.
