  • Faut-il reviser la notion de Weltliteratur?" This question has been relevant throughout the history of Comparative Literature, both before and after it was asked by Etiemble at the ICLA Congress held in Friburg in 1964. Ever since the foundational works of Joseph Texte on the origins of literary cosmopolitanism, not one generation of comparatists has been able to contribute to the scholarship on this issue without referring in one way or another to Goethian ideas. The history of Comparative Literature reflects the ongoing rereading of the Goethian notion and how its value and meaning have changed over the years. The same applies to the concepts of world citizenship, cosmopolitanism, and universalism in various fields. However, the goal of this article is to reunite the concepts of Weltliteratur and Weltburgertum in order to propose new foundations for revisiting and reexamining the origins of Comparative Literature and the present need for such a reexamination.
