Dillery discusses Flavius Josephus' criticism of Apion's account of Jews from the Aegyptiaca in his own Contra Apionem and at the same time on Apion as a Homeric scholar. Josephus mounted an attack on Apion's reputation as a grammatikos as well, even though it did not really concern his main target, namely, Apion's historical writing. He uses the term grammatikos in the sense of "scholar" only four times: all occurrences are found in the second book of his Contra Apionem, and all describe Apion.
