Among the repeated motifs and story-lines in Herodotus' "History" should be included the narrative pattern of the duel and the sole survivor. Dillery examines the contest between Argos and Sparta for control of Thyrea and the Spartan defense of Thermopylae to demonstrate Herodotus' tendency to present duels and their sole survivors as tests that require "ratification" by a second contest.
