Singleton traces the development in Joyce of what Bataille calls the "Icarus complex"-a "thematics of sacrifice stretching all the way from the portrait of the young artists, via Ulysses, to the Wake itself." Joyce thereby discovers a radical sovereignty capable of removing him from the master-slave dialectic which underwrites the constraining systems of both Christianity and capitalism alike. The study sets out to read Joyce through the economic and philosophical concepts theorized by Bataille and to consider the degree to which they can help one understand some of the underlying motifs in Joyce's work.
