• The first of these (pp. 16-206), devoted to the context of the period, contains essays on the political, social, and economic history of the time; the question of Romanticism's succeeding phases; the Romantics' position regarding the preceding Enlightenment; European influences; German Romanticism in relation to romanticisms elsewhere in Europe; Romanticism from the perspective of the succeeding Realism; and the history of scholarship about Romanticism. The last and longest of these three main sections (pp. 392-614) broadens the scope to include essays on "Kunste und Wissenschaften" in relation to Romanticism: painting, music, philosophy, political science, social science, history, religion and theology, psychology, and natural science. The disadvantage of such a survey by many hands is of course that there is no unifying thread of argument, while the advantage gained is the specialized know,ledge of the given author of the particular essay.
