Jackson's treatment, enriched by a wide-ranging command of cultural, political, and intellectual history, breaks off after 1953, with Ellison basking in the phenomenal success that followed the publication of Invisible Man, while Rampersad, more interested in and attuned to the importance of interpersonal relationships, addresses the life as a whole, which means he has to face the perennial and vexing question of why, after decades of often intense writing, Ellison failed to complete his long-anticipated second novel. Considering prevailing contemporary attitudes toward race and class, such a charge is particularly onerous. As his indictment of Ellison mounts, Rampersad sprinkles his text liberally with qualifiers ("perhaps"-"probably"-"likely"), but his cumulative insinuations and innuendoes take their toll.\n Surely a fondness for "fat" cigars, finely-honed martinis, tailored clothes, and posh surroundings does not constitute an objective evil, but such well-earned and long-deferred indulgences are made to work against Ellison, who-one must reluctantly conclude-is simply not black enough for Arnold Rampersad.
