It begins with Rhona J. Berenstein's chapter, "Acting Live: TV Performance, Intimacy, and Immediacy 1945-1955," which lays out the basic tenets of small-screen naturalism as a product both of aesthetic standards in response to the cinematic widescreen and of the various technical requirements of the new, living room-based medium of TV. While not revolutionary in her thesis, what Hatch gets right is her carefully footnoted historical accounting of these early TV events that set the tone for commercial sponsorship even as they suggested ways in which TV viewers, especially women, account for their "reality" by using print and TV experts combined with lived experience.
