  • When I received a phone call inquiring whether I would like to review this book, I immediately and without hesitation agreed to do so. The title of this book intrigued my curiosity for personal as well as academic reasons: being the mother of a 1-year old and a 3-year old and just being promoted to Associate Professor at the University of Michigan are two excellent personal reasons to wonder about "stress among women in modern society." Furthermore, while working on my book on "Reactions to critical life events-a social psychological analysis" (Praeger Publ., 1991), I often felt that I should -- at least -- include a chapter on the specific issues about women facing situations with critical life events and stress. I expected that this book would do exactly what I thought needed to be done: describe the specific stressors women encounter, the consequences of encountering stress for women's health, productivity and subjective well-being, the ways women's socialization sets them up to appraise situations differently (for example, due to differences in locus of control or attributional styles, or the amount of resources available) and to use different coping mechanisms than men (for example, the role of giving and receiving of social support for men and women).
