  • The present study follows a number of others on Richard Wagner's music dramas published by Mary Cicora over the past dozen years, beginning with a book "Parsifal" Reception in the "Bayreuther Blatter" (1987) and followed by another, From History to Myth: Wagner's Tannhauser and Its Literary Sources (1992), in addition to a half-dozen articles in scholarly journals. The third chapter attempts to interpret the Ring in relation to Wagner's theoretical treatise Oper und Drama, offering in addition to many telling comments and observations the radical conclusion that the tetralogy "is a musical-dramatic discourse on mythological hermeneutics" (89). Despite the study's rather haphazard, undisciplined character, and the often strained reaching for so-called critical theory, the book should be welcomed for the author's knowledge regarding Wagner and his works and for the often convincing and stimulating arguments she puts forth therein.
