The microscopic and metallurgical examination of the awl was designed to determine the material from which the awl was made, consider any chronological and other clues offered by the composition, look for traces of use, and determine the place of the awl in the funeral rite and whether it had been placed on the pyre. On inspection the awl proved to be too slender to take either a drilled or a cut sample without risk of noticeably altering its outline or otherwise damaging it; thus all examinations were made on the awl as received.
