Early Christian writers merely note the existence of a tomb of Rachel, but later witnesses speak of a Greco-Roman era pyramid, then of a Crusader builder who put the dome in place, followed by extensive renovations in 1615 by Mohammed Pasha of Jerusalem, and finally of the nineteenth- century reconstruction of the tomb at the initiative of the British Jewish philanthropists Moses and Judith Montefiore.
