Hans von Bühel, who is known not only as the author of the poem edited here by Maryvonne Hagby, but also of the Diocletianus, a verse rendering of the Septem Sapientes dated 1412, hailed from the region of Basel and is attested in the service of the margraves of Hachberg on the Upper Rhine and at the court of the Archbishop of Cologne.The Königstochter von Frankreich is a German version, in couplet verse and based on an unknown source, of the popular narrative sometimes known as the 'Calumniated Queen' and known from works such as La Manekine by Philippe Rémi, La Belle Hélene de Constantinople, the Roman du comte dAnjou by Jehan Maillot, the Middle High German Mai und Beaflor, and Chaucer's 'Man of Law's Tale'.
