Beschreibungen/Notizen
  • Starting from this surprising omission of Salzburg's most famous son from a standard guidebook, I found evidence of further omissions, namely, that there were few documented performances of Mozart's music in Salzburg after his death; no Mozart monument; no Mozart society; no commemorative meeting; no concert to memorialize his passing. In that year, Mozart took an extended journey to northern Germany in response-so he informed his wife-to a favorable invitation from the King of Prussia, an invitation that allegedly led to a commission for six string quartets and six piano sonatas. [...] a closer look at the evidence reveals that the king did not even grant Mozart a personal audience when he arrived in Potsdam, and the absence of any confirming documents shows that Mozart almost certainly invented the story and thereby became enmeshed in a web of falsehoods and fabrications that seriously put his marriage at risk (Solomon 1995,437-54).
