During the nineteenth century, the large marble sculpture of Ariadne on the Panther (1803-14) by the Stuttgart court sculptor Johann Heinrich von Dannecker (1758-1841) was the most famous sculpture in Germany, attracting visitors from around the world. This article explores several aspects of the 'life story' of Dannecker's Ariadne in the nineteenth century, namely its display, and the production and collecting of some of the countless replicas and reproductions. By exploring the history and development of the Ariadne's presentation, we gain an insight into the sculptor's and patron's interpretation of the work, as well as the intellectual and sensory context in which the work was created, viewed and encountered. This article demonstrates how the viewer's experience of the Ariadne was mediated through display choices, and explores the reasons behind them.
