The recent success of the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) in state elections provokes the question about the classification of the new party. Who marks it as a populist right-wing party does not explain whether it is democratic or extremist. Populism and extremism should not be measured on the same scale. Extremism is the antithesis of a constitutional democracy, whereas populism is a political style characterized by the antagonism of the people and the elite, a charismatic leader, by sensational presentation of their positions in the media and by creating crises. There are four archetypes: democratic and non-populist; extremist and non-populist; extremist and populist; democratic and populist. The AfD is in its core a populist party - even though strong leadership is missing - but not an extremist party - although statements regarding Islam are vague. A culture of conflict in Germany could weaken the AfD.
