  • For many years psychologists have been interested in the relationship between position in the family and success in later life. Numerous published studies, both in professional journals and in popular media, have speculated on the reasons for the disproportionate number of first-born sons who became successful in various fields. (Girls were generally ignored in the studies in those pre-Women's Lib days.) The psychologists' theories on the reasons for the oldest son's greater achievement (this, of course, includes the only child) hinge on various aspects of the family interaction, particularly the child-parent relationship. It is clear that the oldest son has more undivided attention from his parents, and especially his father, at an early age. The differences in his environment might reasonably he expected to show up in many later personality differences, (In recent years many investigations have also been done on such aspects as anxiety, peer relationships, affiliation, and other personality factors of psychological interest.)
