An empirically based PT contributes to professional religious praxis with-in the church a conception of the communication of Christian faith as meaningful for people's intrinsically religious concerns and their search for meaning within their everyday lives. To this end, practical theology employs a general, formal-functional understanding of religion and the methods of empirical social research. Its practical aim focuses on the fluid development of compatible communications between, on the one hand, contemporary forms of religious expression, in all their hybridity and ambiguity, and, on the other hand, received forms of Christian expressions and symbols. As an analysis of the former, it is a theology of religion in culture; as a revitalization of the latter, it is a theology of culture in religion.
