• The article is based on the observation that the object of Practical Theology is subject to fluctuation. Instead of previous determination by "pastor", "church", "religion" and "practice", the article proposes "communication of the gospel". "Communication" opens practical-theological theory to empirical research, "gospel" to theology. This determination with contemporary relevance leads to a new formatting of Practical Theology which is at the same time closer to the empirically knowable lifeworld as well as to theological insights. Traditional pastoral theology becomes theory of the activities which support the communication of the gospel; ecclesiology becomes theory of the social forms within which the gospel is communicated.
