  • (17) Rose's characterization was more firmly grounded in historical research but was still intentionally impressionistic and "nostalgic," stressing the positive aspects of the experiment by concluding that "legal recognition of the 'evils' incorporated therein could reduce both their incidence and their virulence to the point at which sensible city officials could keep them from becoming a moral and financial drain on the community" (Rose ix, 39). On the contrary, during those years the gradual acceptance of jazz by African American, Creole, and even white social elites allowed New Orleans jazz musicians to expand their field of operations to include dances at Carnival parties and debutante balls, engagements in hotels and upscale restaurants, greater access to riverboat jobs, and local- ly-made recordings.
